2023 Trek Fuel EXe review - Lake Mountain, Cascades Trail
First released to the world in the second half of 2022, Trek is the latest big industry player to debut an e-mountain bike favouring a lightweight battery, lower output motor and ride characteristics similar to an analogue trail bike.
Named the Fuel EXe, the lightweight e-bike is based on the brand's wildly popular Fuel EX line of trail bikes and features a host of similarities to its unpowered sibling. In this video, we’ll take you through what we liked, what we didn’t and exactly who this modern trail e-mountain bike is aimed at.

    Looks like a great rack, but wonder why you didn't spec the bolts to be the length that you need? A longer bolt sticking out is simply something that a consumer can hit with their hand/arm.

    I bought the Trek Domane SLR 7 Gen 4 and cannot believe how comfortable and fast it is. Yes it’s expensive, but to me comfort and fit is priority. I have been riding a Cervelo S2 Ultegra for 7 years and really don’t see much if and speed drop relative to power and HR. AND the Domane has 32mm tubeless tires where my Cervelo has 25mm. Also, no more neck pain with the more relaxed geometry for my 57 year old frame 😊. My only gripe is that the Bontrager tires are garbage and the rear tire started bulging which Trek warrantied. The new Conti5000 tubeless 32mm are more comfortable and slightly faster anyway. I must note that I have shorter arms and long legs. The Domane geometry just works for me.

    This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

    No issues with assembly for me ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

    Nice looking bike but poor quality control or poor transport.Rear wheel has major issues right out of the box. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Rear axle is bent! Derailleur is misaligned.Since the rear wheel comes assembled I would have expected better.Assembly instructions poorly written, but that was not unexpected...just annoying.I just had the bike checked at a shop and was told that I should contact the seller about getting a whole rear wheel assembly with cartridge. (The bike shop could not do anything to help me).Not a good experience with this bike, so lesson learned.Added 3 stars for excellent customer serviceUpdate Sept 8 2020Just received a complete replacement wheel for free. Great service and an otherwise fine bike.

    • @bikeexchange
      @bikeexchange Рік тому

      Good question Peter, the next model up in this range carries a price premium of around $2k. Assuming you'd simply looking to update the suspension package, the cost difference is marginal. The main benefit up updating vs upgrading is the flexibility to choose what ever suspension package you like rather than being given what's included at standard. Hope that helps!

    Sold my orbea rise for this one. I ordered the base model as well, same blue colour as you. I will be swapping fork, shock, dropper, brakes and wheels right away since I have it already. Especially the fork with the awful motion control damper is worth upgrading. Also, thanks for finally showing the base model. All the reviewers got the top models and it's almost impossible to find the base models on video.

    • @TeamCykelhold
      @TeamCykelhold Рік тому

      @@LoboLouie2 Much of it was because it was nearing end of warranty and Shimano does not stand by their motors after warranty so you can be unlucky and end up with an unrepairable motor. But also, I disliked the rattle, and very flexy noodle backend and the display options. It's a great bike, but the Shimano motors lets it down because of how terrible the motors are to repair.

    • @bikeexchange
      @bikeexchange Рік тому

      Valid point! However, save for the Orbea Rise and the Specialized Levo SL, The EXe rides closer to a traditional trail bike than just about every other e-bike on the market. As such that’s why we think this is the type of bike that is the ideal stepping stone into assisted riding for mountain bikers.

    So my thing is, I am thinking about the domane sl 6 gen 4 with bontrage aeolus 35 mm and 28 vredestein forza 28 mms on it; does that make sense? I believe it is a comfortable bike, but can it be fast enough for riding in group….?

    • @bikeexchange
      @bikeexchange Рік тому

      Apologies for the delayed response here Raf, the geometry of the latest SL and SLR Domane is identical, and a little more performance orientated than the previous generation. While it still uses Trek's H2 fit which is designed around endurance riding as opposed to the more aggressive H1.5 found on the Emonda and Madone, i definitely felt like this fit more like an all around bike and had adjusted the spacers to suit my riding style. On the rubber, i spent half of the test period with 28mm rubber strapped to the bike and if i'm honest, it woke the bike up. It felt much more eager to accelerate and a better bike all around. While the 35mm rubber was great at soaking up road buzz, they were not great in the rolling resistance department and i found them to be 2-3kph slower on average than the thinner rubber i was running. I hope this helps!

You see, in some vids I see the saddle at same height as the front, and in yours the saddle is much higher? Also on the trek bike site, I do not see the many spacers in front?

    Considering XC full suspension - hardtail gives no advantage when it comes to efficiency (fullsus are generally more efficient for XC, also for climbing), it gives you mostly weight (and cost) reduction.
